Competing on the Edge - Strategy as Structured Chaos [VHS]
Price: $95.00
Intense, high-velocity change is relentlessly reshaping the face of business in fledgling high-tech ventures and Fortune 500 giants, from Santiago to Stockholm, in steel and silicon. Everywhere and in every industry, markets are merging, closing, shrinking, splitting, colliding, and growing, and traditional approaches to business strategy are no longer adequate. In this lecture, filmed at Stanford University, Kathleen Eisenhardt explains why standard business-survival strategies must give way to entirely new approaches.

Gender Roles, Traditions, and Generations to Come: The Collision of Competing Interests and the Feminist Paradox
Price: $69.35
Author: Wade C. MacKey
Manufacturer: Kroshka Books
While everyone alive today is guaranteed to have ancestors, no one is born with a similar guarantee to have descendants. In a parallel truism, everyone alive in the year 2200 AD will be able to trace his or her lineal ancestry to a parental stock in the year 200 AD. This book addresses two questions 1) "Which facets of current cultures are aligned with enhanced fertility of their members and which facets of current cultures are aligned with reduced fertility of their members?" and (2) "What evolutionary pressures sculpted the reproductive psychology of current women and the behavioral consequences of that psychology?" The argument is presented that women's mating strategies are much more complex than their primate sisters'. Our female ancestors had to evaluate and select as mates those men who were dominant within the male hierarchy plus were nurturing to their children. No other female primate has just a complicated mating calculus to perform. Here we are different. Within the context of the female mating tactics, each intact or coherent (sub) group, community is faced with a conundrum. To wit" if a (sub) group allows each member to maximize his or her own independence and freedom, then this maximization threatens, over generations, the sheer existence of that (sub) group. If cultural continuity is to occur, over generations, then individual freedom and independence are mandated to be restricted. Furthermore, it appears that the social dynamics of cultural evolution have a winnowing effect. Those cultures which restrict selected freedoms of their citizens have a more positive evolutionary trajectory than those cultures without such restrictions. Social and political leaders are encouraged to find the elusive balance between individual autonomy and community stability across generations.

Competing Interests: Policy vs. Science on the Road: Examining the Effects of Pennsylvania's Current Legislation on Seatbelt and Motorcycle Helmet Use
Price: $69.00
Author: Aaron Secrest
Manufacturer: LAP Lambert Academic Publishing
Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death in the U.S. and in Pennsylvania. The impact is most pronounced in teenagers and young adults. Seatbelts and motorcycle helmets are proven to save lives, yet presently, one in seven Pennsylvanians do not wear seatbelts, and about 50% of motorcyclists do not wear helmets. This book explores what would happen if Pennsylvania were to upgrade to stricter seatbelt and helmet laws. Between 1994 and 2006, 15,000 people died in car crashes on Pennsylvania roads, but at the same time, seatbelts saved nearly 5,000 Pennsylvanian lives, and helmets saved another 750 lives. If seatbelt and helmet use increased to 95%, another 4,500 lives saved could have been saved over the same time period. Before-and-after analysis shows what happened after the 2003 repeal of the PA universal helmet law. Universal seatbelt and helmet laws would potentially save 340 lives each year in Pennsylvania. These premature deaths affect not only the physical and mental health of loved ones, but also the economic health of a state highly dependent on tax revenues from younger adults to support its large aging population.
