How Would You Go About Outlining A Critical Analysis Essay On Henry James' Theme Of The New World Vs Old World?

I have to write a 10 page paper about the Henry James' writings; the pieces I choose are The Turn of the Screw, Daisy Miller, and The Portrait of a Lady... Can anyone help me? It be much appreciated.

Answer:This is the technique that I have developd over many years of paper writing: I'd go over each work and identify maybe three major divisions/categories of information from each. I like to categorize information, then make an outline. I'm not terribly familiar with your topic, though I have read the books. But, let's say I'm writing about women's roles in Shakespeare--something I do know a lot about. Maybe I want to highlight three works--Macbeth, Hamlet, and Taming of the Shrew. In this example, I might focus on wives, daughters, and motheres. I would make an outline for Macbeth with the categories: wives, motheres, daughters. Then, I would go through Macbeth and find some good quotes or examples for each category and put it inot that outline, etc. I'd do that for each work. If you have to use secondary sources--I go over each source, writing down good facts/quotes for each one (with the page number of course). It's easy to do this while watching TV or whatever; I usually do it quite a bit ahead of time. Once I have made my outline, I assign each setcion a color. For a ten page paper, I'd probably assign a color to each work and a color to quotes/facts that I want in my intro and conclusion. Let's say Macbeth is orange. I then go through the quotes and notes I wrote down and highlight everything I have about Macbeth orange. When you're writing your paper and you have an outline and these color coded notes in front of you, it goes quickly. You're basically just putting the info togethere at that point. You don't have to flip through various books or any of that. I wrote a 100 page thesis this way (on Shakespeare and the Protestant Reformation). It went smoothly. So, I hope it helps you, too. It's made my life much easier. By the way--have your thesis statement done before you do any of this, since the categories/evidence you're finding all realtes to that. But, you may have done that already.

What Books By Henry James Do You Suggest?

For my AP English classs I have to read a novel by Henry James and a few of his short stories (like 3.) I was just wondering if you guys had any suggestions on whichh ones to read. Id prefer that the novel was not an easy read but not so hard ill never understand it.

Answer:For the novel I think I'd suggest What Maisie Knew -- a good example of James' fuller late style, but the plot and theme has interest and it isn't as much of a handful as some otheres. The Spoils of Poynotn is similar. For earlier simpler books, you might try Washington Square. For stories, I'd suggest Turn of the Screw, Beast in the Jungle and one of Daisy Miller, The Aspern Papers, or maybe The Jolly Corner.
