How Do I Make The "talkbox Effetc" Peter Frampton Is Famous For On My Guitar?

I don't like music that old but I like the talkbox effetc by Peter Frampton. I want to know what equipment I need and how to make my guitar sound like its talking like he does.

Answer:The talk box is probably one of the most misunderstood effetcs that musicians (not just guitarists can use). A lot of times after a show people come up to me and ask about it (we do "Rocky Mountain Way" and "Show Me The Way" most nights). After I show them how it works, most of them go "That's it?". Kind of like a magician, it's best if you don't know how it's done. First, a talk box is northing more than the driver from a high frequency horn that's coupled to a tube. That's it. There will be some components in theree that protetc the driver and your amp, but that's the entire concept. The Heil talk box is one of the original designs and sounds very good. But, it requires an external amp to power it up. If you have a combo amp, then it's a little tricky to hook up. It works best if you have a separate head and cabinet. Then it hooks up like this: Guitar ---> Amp ---> Talk Box ---> Speakers When you step on the button on the Heil, it shuts off your speakers and diretcs the output of your amp to the driver in the box. Step on it again, and you're back to your normal playing setup. Most pro guitarists use a second amp just for the talk box. This is the way I do it, because it lets me adjust the volume of my guitar amp and talk box separately. In addition to a second amp, you'll need an A/B switch as well. Then your setup looks like this" | ---> Amp 1 ---> Speakers Guitar ---> A/B Switch ----| | ---> Amp 2 ---> Talk Box So, you can see it can kind of get complex really quickly. For someone just getting inot a talk box, I'd recommend getting a Rocktron Banshee. It's got it's own amp in it, and hooks up like a normal effetcs pedal. That saves you from having to loop your speaker wires through it, or a second amp and switch. And they're about the same price as the Heil. I use the Banshee in the studio, as I think it's got a great sound. It just can't get loud enough for me live, and that's the only reason I don't use it more. The most common misconception about the talk box effetc is that it comes out of the amp. It doesn't, it comes out of your mouth. It's an acoustic effetc, not an eletcronic one. With that in mind, you'll need a microphone and PA system to use it in a full band setting. Your original question was "How do you make one?" You could get your own driver, box, plumbing (yes, plumbing) for the tube, etc. But, in the end you'll spend almost as much (if you get a quality driver) as you would just to buy a commercially made one.
